The core aim of Version 5 is to empower you. We wanted to give you deeper ways to discover and make educated choices about the exact ingredients you wish to avoid, make every feature in the app communicate seamlessly with one another, and ultimately, make it easier and less anxiety-inducing to find safe foods to eat.
Smarter, Deeper Ingredient Selection
While Mealeez retains the simple option of typing an ingredient name and quickly selecting its severity, we’ve introduced a newly refined, incredibly powerful selection process that allows you to drill down into your choices like never before.
You can now use a “global severity” method—setting a broad rule for an entire category—and then override it for specific items. For example, you can set a global severity of Severe for all Beans, but scroll down and specifically set Adzuki Beans to Moderate and Guar Beans to Safe.
Not only that, but every single ingredient on the app now features a detailed description. You’ll learn exactly where an ingredient comes from, what foods it is commonly used in, and any established reactivity or cross-reactivity risks. This completely transforms how you build your profile, allowing for a much more informed and educational approach to your food allergies.
Once you’re happy with your choices, you simply tap “Add To The List” and Mealeez will save it against your allergy profile.
Your Ultimate, Personalised Allergy Database
But we didn’t stop at just adding descriptions during the selection process; we’ve made sure those descriptions remain accessible for ingredients you’ve already saved. You now have the full ability to search our database to learn more about ingredients at any time. Mealeez lists synonyms for every ingredient, so if a direct synonym doesn’t exist, it will educate you by telling you what parent ingredient that particular food comes from. For instance, if you search for “Locust Bean Gum”, the app will highlight it with a swirling border and show it filed under the synonym “Carob Gum,” letting you know we respected your search while educating you on alternative naming.
Behind the scenes, we’ve entirely re-categorised the database to be more sensible and user-friendly. Instead of all fish just being grouped under “Fish,” they are now listed under their specific families (like Salmonids, Lizardfish, Jacks & Pompanos). We’ve also stripped away overwhelming inert ingredients and acids so you can focus strictly on hyper-specific proteins, like Capsicum in the nightshade family.
Cost-Effective, Faster Grocery Shopping
We’ve given the Groceries area a makeover under the hood, ensuring the home screen loads faster than ever before. But we also wanted to make grocery shopping more practical for your wallet.
A PLUS exclusive feature. Prices are now displayed against every item on the grocery overview layout. Furthermore, we’ve added the highly requested ability to sort your grocery search results by price (Low to High, or High to Low). We’ve also introduced clear indicator icons so you know exactly which features and benefits are unlocked by your PLUS membership.
The Ultimate AI Recipe Assistant, Now Linked to Your Groceries
A PLUS exclusive feature. Your AI Recipe Assistant already had the incredible ability to analyse recipes and suggest safe alternative ingredients based on your profile. With v5.0, your assistant can now directly recommend specific grocery items for you to buy.
Whenever the Assistant suggests an alternative ingredient, a tappable link now appears. Tapping this instantly takes you to the Groceries area, automatically filtering out all unsafe food to only show you items that perfectly match your allergy profile. Within seconds, you won’t just learn how to safely adapt a recipe—you’ll know exactly which brands offer those safe swaps, where to buy them, and exactly how much they cost.
Clearer, Family-First Food Label Scanning
When using our label scanner, any ingredients that are flagged during a scan are now fully tappable. Tapping an ingredient immediately brings you to your My Allergy List, where you can discover more about the ingredient itself and exactly why Mealeez flagged it, beautifully tying the app’s features together.
A PLUS exclusive feature. PLUS subscribers already love the ability to combine all family profiles to conduct one master scan. Now, we’ve added swipe-able areas to the combined scan results. If an item is flagged as unsafe, you can simply swipe to check the individual results for specific family members, giving you total clarity on exactly who in the family the scan result applies to.
A Fresh, Intuitive UI & Smarter Dining Out
Every single area of the app has been reviewed and visually refined. Our goal was to make it instantaneous to tell when we are showing you safe, caution, or severe ingredients, significantly reducing your thinking time.
- Quick-Look Restaurant Menus (PLUS Feature): Restaurants have also had a smart makeover. Before you even dive into a full menu, each restaurant now features a “quick-look” breakdown that instantly lists exactly how many safe, cautious, or unsafe items are available for you at that specific location, saving you time and hassle when choosing where to eat.
- Modernised Indicators: Severity levels have been updated with modernised colours and clear visual indicators (ticks, exclamation marks, and crosses).
- Clearer Actions: Many standard action buttons throughout the app have been swapped from red to a sleek dark navy. This ensures that when you see red in Mealeez, you immediately know it is a safety warning, not just a button to tap.
